February Blizzard!

Seems winter is not ready to give way to spring yet. We received five inches of snow yesterday evening and awoke to a winter wonderland!  This was the view from the kitchen window this morning. It is 04:00 pm now and it has pretty much snowed all day. The kids are all excited because they know this means no school for at least a couple days. I'm getting cabin fever and it has allowed me a chance to dust off this old BLOG site. I have many things I probably should have entered on here to document our farm progress the past several months. But let's just say that after a long fall and winter we are finally sheep farmers! Yup, ... the barn restoration project is pretty much completed, loft, sheep pens, hay storage area, lights, doors and all. We also got our perimeter fence installed around the back pasture. Our five one-two year old ewes arrived almost two weeks ago. Along with their three lambs. At least one of the other two ewes will probably deliver this month. The sheep are Katahdin/Dorper crosses. Both are hair sheep breeds that will shed their winter coat( like a horse) and will not require shearing. We plan on maintaining a maximum flock size of about 10 mature sheep (including a ram we will pick out this fall from elsewhere. We will harvest the "extra" lambs after about 10 months for meat. In the summer they will feed mostly on grass from the pasture.

Two of the new lambs, about 7 weeks old.

Me, I am going to go relax in front of the fireplace until the snow melts!
